SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies, students will be studying the period of history from the late 1700's to the present. We cover as much as possible during the school year. Students will study Delaware History as it relates to American History. Some highlights will be the War of 1812, Louisiana Purchase, Texas Revolution, Mexican - American War, Underground Railroad and Abolitionist Movement, Civil War, Immigration, The Industrial Revolution, World War I, Women's Rights, The Dust Bowl, The Great Depression, World War II, Economics.
Graphic organizers are used as much as possible with the social studies lessons. Some of the skills used are Main Idea and Details, Cause and Effect, Picture Note Taking, Venn Diagrams, the 5 W's, Fact Finding, Prior Knowledge, Map Skills and geography terms.
Whenever possible, Social Studies will be integrated into the Imagine It! Unit themes.
With the Presidential Election this year, students will be using Scholastic's ELECTION 2016 Skills Book and We, The People. Students will also vote in a Mock Election several days before the November 8 Election.
I am looking into a field trip to Fort Delaware this fall and one to Fort Miles in the spring. More info about this will be sent home.
Students will be using the following materials in Social Studies: Delaware Adventure, National Geographic Reading Expeditions, and Nystrom U.S. History. In addition, Scholastic Primary Sources of Information CD for the Smart Board, Shell Education Leveled Texts, and videos will be used. Whenever possible, poetry and music is incorporated into Social Studies with the Scholastic book American History Poems, and Creative Teaching Press Voices in American History.
